Retaining walls are an important part of any landscape, as they prevent soil erosion, control water flow, and help to create visually appealing outdoor spaces. However, traditional retaining walls can sometimes feel out of place in a natural environment. That’s where boulder walls and flagstone come in.
Boulder walls are an ideal choice for homeowners who want something that blends in with their natural surroundings. These walls are made from large, natural boulders that are stacked on top of one another to create a unique and natural-looking barrier.
When it comes to choosing the right boulders for your wall, it’s important to select stones that are of similar size and shape, so they fit together well. If you’re unsure about what type of boulders to choose or how to arrange them, it’s best to consult with a professional landscaper who can help you design the perfect wall for your property.
Flagstone is another popular material for retaining walls, as it creates a natural and harmonious look that complements a variety of outdoor spaces. Flagstone is a type of sedimentary rock that has a smooth surface, which is ideal for creating walkways, patios, and retaining walls.
One of the benefits of using flagstone for your retaining wall is that it’s available in a variety of colors and styles, so you can easily find one that matches your landscape’s existing features. Additionally, flagstone is a durable material that withstands harsh weather conditions and requires minimal maintenance.
When selecting flagstone for your retaining wall, it’s important to choose stones that are thick and heavy, so they can support the weight of the soil behind them. It’s also important to select stones that are relatively uniform in size and shape, so they fit together well.
Overall, installing boulder walls and flagstone retaining walls are a great way to enhance your landscape’s natural beauty and functionality while preventing erosion and controlling water flow. To ensure a seamless installation, it’s best to work with a professional landscaper who can guide you through the process and create a design that meets your needs and preferences.

If you’re looking to build a pool and pool deck or remodel an existing one, it’s crucial that you choose your materials before breaking ground. For decades concrete has been the leading material for pool decks, but in just a few years paving stones have made a significant impact in the pool deck world for their numerous benefits over their predecessor.
Below, we have listed the four main factors to consider before choosing a paving material and how each material stacks up. By the end of this article, you should have the knowledge to make an informed decision on what material is right for you.
POOL DECK SLIP RESISTANCE / SLIP COEFFICIENT
By design, paving stones are inherently more porous and denser than concrete. Most paving stones are made by combining sand, water, cement mixture and color pigment, then pouring the mixture into a mold. This means that on a molecular level, paving stones have a more complex surface than regular concrete, making them an excellent source for traction. Paving stones also have a smaller surface area than concrete slabs and when installed in an interlocking pattern, they give an added level of slip resistance.
POOL DECK AESTHETICS
Not only are paving stones the better choice in terms of safety, they are also the most versatile pool deck material. Due to the thousands of variations, paving stones can lend themselves to all design styles, from rustic to ultra-modern. Paving stones can be made to replicate natural stone or be created in larger stones to compliment a sleeker aesthetic. Pavers also come in a variety of colors and can easily be paired with your home’s style. To add another layer of customization, you can also mix and match different shapes, colors and stones to create ornate patterns in your design.
Strength plays an integral role in the durability of pool deck materials. When talking about the strength of the materials, paving stones can handle around 8,000 PSI (or pounds per square inch) of pressure, as opposed to concrete which can hold around 3,500 PSI. This makes a notable difference if you are planning on adding heavy patio furniture, prefabricated outdoor kitchens or hosting guests on your pool deck.
PAVER POOL DECK MAINTENANCE
Keeping your investment looking great year-round and which materials will make that easy on you are important factors to consider before starting your project. Maintenance required for paving stones is few and far between, especially if you get your pavers sealed after they’re installed. Paver sealer is a protective layer sprayed on to keep the stones stain-resistant, maintain their color and keep the joint sand from transferring. This means that if you spill a glass of wine, the kids drop their ice cream or anything in between, your paving stone pool deck is protected and stain free. If, god forbid, a stain does happen on your paving stone pool deck, you simply replace the single stone or stones affected without having to replace the entire deck. The same can’t be said if you go with the concrete counterpart.
In North America, over 50% of residential water is used on landscapes and lawns. That is a huge amount of water that could be used for growing crops and human consumption.
Xeriscaping is a type of landscape design that dramatically decreases the amount of water needed to maintain a beautiful front or back yard landscape. A well-designed xeriscape can decrease your water usage anywhere from 50 to 75 percent. Utah is a great region for homeowners to consider using xeriscape. Statistically, Utah is the 2nd driest state in the nation! With an average of 8-11 inches of rain annually, this makes Utah an ideal place to install a water-wise yard.
Utah’s natural plant life offers a wide range of color, texture, and interest to any xeriscaping design. When deciding if you’ll enjoy a xeriscape design in your yard, take a drive around your local nature reserves, or walk through a nature trail to see what your environment has to offer for vegetation. Whatever you see in the wild will thrive within your xeriscape design.
A well-designed xeriscape can not only significantly reduce water consumption, but will also save you money on your water bill. In an effort to promote water efficiency, many local governments are offering incentives to move to a more water-conscious landscaping design. Utah Water Savers shares that Utah residents can receive up to $1.25 per square foot of lawn that is replaced with a water-efficient design.
No xeriscaping project is too big for All States Landscaping.
